Where the battery is on the RAV4

Under the hood on gas RAV4s, in the engine bay. RAV4 Hybrid models can use a different 12-volt battery, sometimes mounted elsewhere, so we match those from the VIN.

AGM and start-stop

For 2006–2018 RAV4s, a standard battery fits and AGM is an optional upgrade, worth it if the SUV sits for long stretches, makes a lot of short trips or runs accessories with the engine off.

Whatever the table says, we replace AGM with AGM: if the battery in your SUV is labeled AGM, a flooded battery is not a substitute. Read AGM vs standard batteries.

Hybrid models

Our fitment table lists group H5 (47) or H6 (48) for 2019–2025 RAV4s and group 35 for 2006–2018 RAV4s. H5 on models without auto start-stop, H6 on models with it. For other model years (2026 or newer, and anything before 2006), the technician confirms the battery from your VIN before dispatch instead of guessing.

Does the Toyota RAV4 need an AGM battery?

On 2019–2025 RAV4s, models with auto start-stop came with an enhanced flooded battery (EFB), a heavier-duty flooded design. Those need EFB or AGM, never a basic flooded battery; we fit AGM. Models without start-stop can take a standard battery. H5 on models without auto start-stop, H6 on models with it.
