AGM and start-stop

On 2016–2025 Malibus, some trims need AGM. The 1.5-liter turbo with auto stop/start needs an AGM; the 2.0-liter turbo takes a standard H6. The 2016–2019 Malibu Hybrid uses a different battery, matched from the VIN. If yours has auto start-stop, or the battery in it now is labeled AGM, it needs AGM again.

On 2014–2015 Malibus, some trims need AGM. 2.5-liter models with auto stop/start use an AGM H8 plus a small auxiliary battery; 2.0-liter turbo models and cars without stop/start use a standard H5. The Malibu Eco is matched from the VIN. If yours has auto start-stop, or the battery in it now is labeled AGM, it needs AGM again.

For 2013 Malibus, a standard battery fits and AGM is an optional upgrade, worth it if the car sits for long stretches, makes a lot of short trips or runs accessories with the engine off.

Whatever the table says, we replace AGM with AGM: if the battery in your car is labeled AGM, a flooded battery is not a substitute. Read AGM vs standard batteries.

Battery registration

Some late-model Malibus monitor the battery through a sensor on the negative cable and adjust charging as the battery ages. On those, the new battery may need a reset or registration so the car charges it correctly. We check from your VIN and tell you before the appointment.

Hybrid models

Hybrid versions of the Malibu are matched separately from the VIN, since their 12-volt battery can be a different size and sit in a different place. See hybrid and EV 12-volt batteries.
