Hybrid and EV 12-volt battery replacement

Hybrids and electric vehicles have a large drive battery, but they also carry a small 12-volt battery that wakes up the computers, door locks and dash. When that one dies, the car will not turn on, even with a fully charged drive battery.

Signs the 12-volt battery is the problem

  • The car will not power on, or the dash stays dark or flickers.
  • The key fob or app will not unlock the doors.
  • A 12-volt battery or electrical system warning appears.
  • The car powers on, then shuts down again.

What we check before we head out

Hybrid and EV 12-volt batteries come in more shapes than regular car batteries. Many are AGM, and many sit in the trunk, under a rear seat or behind a panel. Some newer electric vehicles use a lithium-ion 12-volt battery that is only sold by the dealer. We check which battery your vehicle uses from the VIN and tell you before booking whether we can replace it on site.

We only work on the 12-volt system. The orange cables in a hybrid or EV carry high voltage and are never touched during a 12-volt battery replacement.

Jump-starting a hybrid or EV

Some hybrids and EVs can be jump-started through dedicated terminals under the hood, and some should not be used to jump other cars. Follow your owner’s manual, or call us and we will talk you through your options.

Common questions

Does my hybrid or electric car have a regular 12-volt battery?

Yes. Hybrids and EVs use a small 12-volt battery to start up their computers, door locks and safety systems. Many use an AGM battery; some newer EVs use a lithium-ion 12-volt battery that is only sold by the dealer. We check which one your vehicle uses from the VIN and tell you before booking.

Why do you confirm the price before sending a technician?

Battery prices and stock change, and taxes and fees depend on the exact battery. Confirming the battery, the availability and the full price before dispatch means no surprise charges and no wasted trip with the wrong battery. The final price is confirmed before we send the technician, based on availability, taxes and fees.

How much does mobile battery replacement cost?

Your total has four parts: the battery’s retail price, a refundable core charge where it applies, installation labor for your vehicle and Texas sales tax. TotalPro batteries are listed from about $119.99, Duralast standard batteries from about $179.99 and Duralast Platinum AGM batteries from about $259.99 before core charge, labor and tax. Labor starts at $90 and depends on how hard the battery is to reach. The battery finder shows the battery price and the labor for your vehicle, and we send the confirmed total before we dispatch. See how pricing works.

When do I pay?

After the battery is installed and the vehicle starts. Nothing is charged before the work is done.

Can you replace a battery at my apartment, office or a parking garage?

Yes, as long as the vehicle is parked somewhere safe and we are allowed to work there. Mention low-clearance garages, gate codes or parking levels when you book.
