Where the battery is on the Grand Cherokee

Not under the hood. On 2011–2021 Grand Cherokees the battery sits under the front passenger seat, below a floor cover. On 2022 and newer models, including the Grand Cherokee L, it is on the floor under the driver’s seat, and start-stop models also carry a small auxiliary battery under the front passenger seat. On both generations the posts under the hood are only remote jump-start terminals. The technician moves the seat, opens the floor cover and swaps the battery inside the cabin, which takes longer than an under-hood job.

AGM and start-stop

2011–2021 Grand Cherokees need an AGM battery. The battery vents outside the cabin, so the replacement must be a vented AGM. A standard flooded battery is not a substitute.

Whatever the table says, we replace AGM with AGM: if the battery in your SUV is labeled AGM, a flooded battery is not a substitute. Read AGM vs standard batteries.

Battery registration

Some late-model Grand Cherokees monitor the battery through a sensor on the negative cable and adjust charging as the battery ages. On those, the new battery may need a reset or registration so the SUV charges it correctly. We check from your VIN and tell you before the appointment.

Where is the battery on a Jeep Grand Cherokee?

Not under the hood. On 2011–2021 Grand Cherokees the battery sits under the front passenger seat, below a floor cover. On 2022 and newer models, including the Grand Cherokee L, it is on the floor under the driver’s seat, and start-stop models also carry a small auxiliary battery under the front passenger seat. Why are there battery posts under the hood if the battery is under the seat?

Those are remote jump-start terminals. They are wired to the battery under the front seat (the passenger seat on 2011–2021 models, the driver’s seat on 2022 and newer) so you can jump the vehicle without reaching inside the cabin. Use them for jump-starts; the battery itself is replaced from inside the car.
